Teacher: Tracy Windisch

Class Title and Description: Troupe Satya Style: Belly Dance-Ballet Fusion

In this workshop we will be learning some of what gives Troupe Satya their signature style. Director/Choreographer Tracy Windisch will be breaking down what it is that sets her troupe apart. We will be covering how to blend tight belly dance technique and languid isolations, with flexibility and balance styles gleaned from her classical ballet training. This unique integration is guaranteed to give you combinations that most belly dance fans have never seen before!

The workshop will begin with a warm up that will demonstrate how to increase your flexibility and eventually help you get your splits and deeper back bends. Then you will learn how to make your belly dance skills tighter and more controlled (a brief covering of some basics and how to do them right), some basic layering, a few fun and not so difficult balances that can be used in regular choreography as well as sword dancing, which will lead into some fun level changes and floor work.

Then we will be putting all these elements together in a segment of choreography that Troupe Satya will be performing that weekend. This workshop is highly recommended to anyone who has an interest in choreographing their own shows, as well as solo performers. The combinations learned in this class will spice up any dancer's bag of tricks. Don't miss this opportunity to broaden your knowledge of dance and take home these cutting edge combinations and styles!

Tracy’s Bio:

Tracy Windisch has been studying and performing belly dance for the past 14 years. She began her studies under TerriAnne and began her performance training with Troupe Joweh in 1996. She went on to start teaching her own style and to create and direct the performance group Troupe Satya at the age of 18.

Tracy later continued her training under Suhaila Salimpour. She was a dedicated member of SSSD for about two years, and during part of that time was a performing member of SDC (Suhaila Dance Company). Tracy then went back to being Art Director and Choreographer of Troupe Satya which has gone on to become an award winning belly dance group.

She has also studied ballet extensively for the past 4 years, and has dabbled in many other cultural dance forms such as East Indian and classical Balinese. Many of these techniques appear in her belly dance choreography, making it a unique style that completely sets her shows apart.

In recent years she has gone on to found and artistically direct the circus and fire arts dance company Luminesque, which incorporates belly dance, ballet, martial arts and mixed fire modalities with aerials, stilt walkers, contortion and other classical circus arts.

You can check out Luminesque as well as more pics of Tracy and her performance art at www.luminesquefiretroupe.com. Tracy has been traveling and performing with both these groups and others as well as teaching, training and working as a soloist for the past several years.

Skill Level: Some belly dance experience recommended but not necessary.

What to Bring: Water might be a good idea

What to Wear: Dance workout attire

(Note from Kajira: Tracy and Troupe Satya [and, back when we had fire shows, Luminesque] have been tremendous supporters of Tribal Fest annually.
